In 1995, I accepted a staff writer position at The State newspaper in Columbia where I'd been stringing as a feature writer/photographer between acting jobs. A year and a half later, I was the weekend editor of The State's online product, thestate.com. That led to a job offer from an advertising agency in 1997 where I worked for the next couple of years as a writer and designer. When I left the agency in 1999, I had two things I'd never had before: A mortgage and just enough freelance design work to pay said mortgage.
Life was good, but theatrically unsatisfying. Then, in 2003, I realized that notebook computers, cell phones and email had made it possible for me to accept out-of-town performance contracts for the first time since 1995. Technology had set me free.
A Civil War comedy! We turned the marketing angle for this show on a dime - and at the eleventh hour. Individual "Vaudeville" mugs shot with a two-light setup and reflector. Ads run in "City People" section of Greenville News April 7-28. It's interesting to compare this comedic approach (which is true to the nature of the play) with our earlier, femme fatale angle, as represented by this.
Extraterrestrial fundraiserThe 2010 Centre Stage fundraiser's UFO-themed promotional materials and tickets. This theme was pitched last year, but rejected for reasons that were never made completely clear to me.
Rock 'n Roll Heaven Once a year, Centre Stage produces a rock 'n roll concert. This year's is themed "Rock 'n Roll Heaven." I shot these with a two-light setup, then worked the photos to achieve a graphic novel illustration effect. The posters served as the basis for a major marketing push, which is outlined in the white paper linked to from the first image here ...
