Stagework
When I was ten, my parents enrolled me in a summer drama camp. I objected strenuously, but within a very short time, I was hooked. A year later, I landed my first "leading man" role, playing the title character in a musical version of "Tom Sawyer" produced by The Sumter Little Theatre, a cinder block building that had become the center of my universe. A dozen years later, I was working in theater full-time ...touring theater, dinner theater, regional theater, summerstock ... performer, playwright, director, road manager ... Maine to Florida to Texas. A long and extremely interesting journey.
My acting resume is here (68 kb PDF). My headshot is here (3Mb JPG).

As Ben Hecht in Temple Theatre's 2009 production of Moonlight and Magnolias. Our cast for this show was absolutely solid ... Peggy Taphorn, Mike Brocki and David McClutchey ... and our director was hoooo-ray ... Craig Rhyne, a friend of Peggy from her days in the Big Apple. |
As the Grave Digger in Temple Theatre's 2009 production of Hamlet. This show was done almost back-to-back with Moonlight and Magnolias. |
As El Gallo in The Fantasticks at Centre Stage, October 2007. Shown is "Round and Round" with Anna Beth Bonney. Now that I've played the Mute, Bellomy and El Gallo, I think I can set the show aside for another 20 years until I'm old enough to play Henry. |
I spent the last three months of 2006 playing the villain, Silas Barnaby, in Dollywood's Babes in Toyland, billed as the theme park's "most elaborate production ever." Parton opened our first performance at the 1,500-seat Celebrity Theater. (Video available at top of page.) |
Nine days after closing Babes In Toyland at Dollywood, I went into rehearsal for The Fantasticks, which ran at Temple Theatre in Sanford, NC Jan. 25 - Feb. 11, 2007. Plant a Radish (mp3). Hucklebee and Bellomy (me). Never Say No (mp3). Hucklebee and Bellomy again. |
As Joe Taylor (center) in Imperfect Theater's Some Americans Abroad. There was much discussion about the weakness of the script, but the show was well-received and I have positive memories of the experience. Directed by Steven Kelsey. |
As Morton Fullerton in Centre Stage production of The Edith Whartons. About a year later, I moved to Greenville, SC to make Centre Stage my primary preoccupation. Local luminary BJ Koonce played herself as Edith Wharton. |
As Mordred back stage with Morgana (Leah McNeely) in a Town Theater (Columbia, SC) production of Camelot. Not sure why I'm listening to her stomach. |
As Sam Krulick in the Chaffin's Barn Dinner Theater (Nashville, TN) production of Claptrap. Directed by Flat Rock Playhouse regular Michael Edwards. That's Flat Rock's Paige Posey far right. |
As Renfield in the Sumter (SC) Little Theatre production of Dracula. This is a publicity shot staged for The Sumter Daily Item. I was in high school, so this would have been some time in the 70's. |
As the King in a high school (Thomas Sumter Academy - Dalzell, SC) production of The Ugly Duckling. This production won first place in the first and last drama competition held by the SC Independent Schools Association. |
As Dwayne Pierce in the Workshop Theatre (Columbia, SC) production of Relative Madness. This show was reassembled by Southeastern Theatrical Productions and taken to NY where it ran for a week or so as a vanity production at Playwright's Horizons. |
As Mr. Dindon in the Workshop Theatre production of La Cage Aux Folles. It was the last time in my life that I've had to wear spandex and a dance belt and I hope never to have to repeat the experience. |
As the Coachman in a musical version of Pinnochio toured by the (UNC-Greensboro) NC Theatre for Young People. This shot was taken after a typically exhausting performance. That's SNL's Rachel Dratch there to my right. I doubt that this credit appears on her resume. |
As Tom with Paige Ramsey as Becky in the 1971 Sumter Little Theatre production of "Tom Sawyer." |
